Problem: In Bann Samkha village, most of the people work on rice farms as my family does and, after the harvest season, there are not enough jobs and villagers do not have the income to support their families. On the other hand, farmers get rid of the rice straw, the crop residue, by burning it, which produces smoke and CO2 emissions. the paper and packaging industry is causing huge environmental problems around the world in terms of deforestation, CO2 and waste management.
Solution: Fang Thai’s rice straw pulp packaging is one of the most environment-friendly options of packaging products in the market. Its paper is not only 100% biodegradable in 30 days but also water, oil and grease resistant (more than two hours) with a non-chemical coating solution that is made from rice straw pulp.
Goals and objectives: To make 100% biodegradable packaging from rice straw pulp and to avoid using any non-toxic chemicals during the process.
Implementation: In 2018, after two years of experimenting and meeting with experts and advisors Mrs. Jaruwan Khammuang and Mr. Nathapol Khammuang, founders of Fang Thai company based in Bann Samkha in Lampang province, Thailand developed a high-quality and environmentally- friendly product.
Fang Thai produces high-quality biodegradable paper and packaging from rice straw with no hazardous chemicals added during the process. In addition, the company will sell its wet pulp to companies that want to produce paper and molding packaging in a sustainable way. Among other certifications, the Natural Material and Fiber Group, Division of Engineering Materials Department of Science Service states that Fang Thai’s rice straw pulp is mercury and heavy metals free and has no AOX substance. In addition, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Thailand calculates the products’ carbon footprint and, considering this, Fang Thai is able to reduce approximately 28,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year addressing in this way one of the most important issues of the industry (https://www.unido.org).
Achievements: Fang Thai's rice straw packaging products directly reduce GHG emissions and air pollution from improper crop burning and the use of less sustainable packaging materials. It also generates new sources of income for the local community, Bann Samkha - a village of 160 families and creates a new industry and value chain of rice straw paper that boosts the local economy in Lampang.
Fang Thai won the Global "Waste Beneficiation" Category award of the Cleantech Open Global Forum 2018, Los Angeles, California and 2019 SEED Low Carbon Award.
