Problem: Climate changes requires coordinated efforts on different levels, including at the level of teaching and training action items for more effective and long-lasting climate adaptation and mitigation plans.

Solution: "Yeni Nesil Binalar için Teknik Eğitim", which means Capacity Development for Future Builders in Turkish is a project to educate educators and teachers, to direct the restricted sector and municipalities in the energy efficiency in Turkey.

Goals and objectives: The Yeni Nesil aims to contribute to the creation of a strong culture on energy efficiency, and prepares the infrastructure for the renewal of low-energy buildings as well as the guidelines for educators in vocational schools and the infrastructure of transferring culture to future generations.

Implementation: The Yeni Nesil project was developed and implemeted by Özyeğin University Center for Energy, Environment and Economy (CEEE) with financial support of the European Union and the Republic of Turkey from September 2017 to September 2018.

It focused on the development of a module to be integrated into the curriculum of vocational and technical schools as well as, creating a roadmap for energy auditing and energy efficient public building renovation in Turkey.

The project contributed to creating a more comprehensive culture around energy efficiency education through trainings of the teachers and lecturers at vocational and technical schools. An artificial intelligence-based chat-bot to help with this was tested during the project.

The project educated teachers in the following areas:

Energy Efficiency Literacy: The Next Generation covers efforts to raise awareness of low-energy buildings in a large number of citizens from different age groups and from different professional backgrounds.

Energy Efficiency Infrastructure: New Generation, Hüseyin Avni Sipahi Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School and İMKB Taşdelen Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School and Nesrin Uçmaklıoğlu Vocational and Technical High School buildings carried out a detailed monitoring and examination of energy performance. All data were analyzed and a roadmap was drawn up in light of the guidelines as well as the guidelines per beneficiary.

Energy Efficiency Impact: The guidelines prepared for the Governorship of Istanbul and Çekmeköy Municipality aim to determine the standard and parameters of the zoning legislation and to guide the development of daily construction habits. Trainers of vocational high schools will soon train the technical students who will be professional in the sector and will lead the use of energy efficiency applications in their works.

In the next phase the project aims to transfer the know-how to Southeast Turkey, as it has the highest unemployment rates, whilst housing approximately 1.300.000 Syrian refugees, since the war in Syria. Later on, it plans to transfer the knowledge to other countries such as Mauritania, Niger and Tunisia, where we already have some educational links.

Achievements: The project prepared guidelines on renovation for low energy buildings, with performing short-term and long-term energy audits in ten selected public schools in collaboration with local energy auditors in Southeast Turkey.

Yeni Nesil was nominated by Türkiye İnşaat Malzemesi Sanayicileri Derneği (İMSAD; Turkish Association of Construction Material Producers) as winner of Investment Awards for the Future 2018.

Budget: EU IPA and Central Finance and Contracts Unit of Ministry of Treasury and Finance, OzU Budget: 50.000,00€, EU Contibution to OzU: %100.
